IMPORTANT NOTE
BOAT CLEAN PLUS™ & BOAT SCRUB™ are required to prep the decks for guaranteed results.
Textured Non-Skid or Anti-Slip boat decks, cockpits and swim platforms provides important traction, but they all suffer from the same problems. They’re constantly getting chalky and dirty. They stain easily from fish blood, red wine and bird droppings. They require constant scrubbing to keep them clean. They get dull, making your boat look old and tired before its time. And, you can’t protect them with boat wax without making them dangerously slippery, especially when they’re wet. It doesn’t matter if yours is a fishing boat, a sailboat a RIB, a wakeboard boat or a cruiser. Maintaining non-skid boat decks is the most tedious part of boat cleaning. There’s no end to it.
But now, there’s a better way. Sure Step promises to restore your faded boat deck to like new again and reduce your maintenance. Imagine your boat decks looking shiny and new and never having to scrub them again. That’s what Sure Step can do for you.
Today, we’re going to show you how easy it is to restore the deck on this tired 1987 Sea Ray with Sure Step. The deck of this boat has more chalk than a math teacher’s blackboard and look at the dirt and stains. Sure Step is a sealer as well as a protective polish. We need to get this deck pristine so we don’t seal in the crud. First, we’re going to clean a small test area to verify that we get the results we want and to make sure there are no unexpected problems.
This looks good. Can you see how bright white it is? It almost fluoresces..
Keeping your new RIB or Inflatable Boat clean and protected against environmental damage can easily double the useful life of your boat, keep it looking like the day you bought it, increase your pride of ownership and bring a much higher return when it comes time to trade up or sell.
Your boat will be expected to live and survive in the Marine Environment; the toughest environment on the planet. It will be under constant attack from dirt, grime, UV, infrared, suntan lotion, marine growth, bacteria, bird and spider droppings, scuffs, stains, ozone and more. A simple and regular maintenance regime can easily defeat these ravages, but you need the right specialty products and procedure to do the job. Failure to keep your boat clean and protected will result in it looking old and tired before its time, may void your warranty and is sure to bring additional problems that can be costly to repair.
Using the right products to care for your boat is important. Household, automotive and industrial products can often cause more harm than good and should not be used. Aurora Boat Care Products are specially formulated for optimum care and maintenance of RIB and Inflatable boats. They’re endorsed, recommended and used by the top boat manufacturers in the world. These products are safe to use on Hypalon, PVC, Polyurethane, Rubber, Fiberglass and Aluminum.
NOTE: Detailed instructions for use and application of all products are on the product labels and on www.AuroraMarine.com
This is the easiest and best time to protect your boat. Within a few months in the marine environment, an unprotected boat can become soiled, stained, fouled and begin to degrade, requiring restoration before it can be properly protected.
When the special fabric for your tube and inflatable floor was manufactured, lubricants and other chemicals were used and they remain on the surface of the fabric after the boat was manufactured. It’s important to strip them away before applying the UV protector otherwise poor adhesion and failure of the protector can result. Even though your boat is new and appears clean, scrub it well with SPEED CLEAN™ and a MARINE POWER MITT™ to remove these pollutants, rinse well and dry. When the tube and fabric floor is dry, apply 2 coats of POLY GUARD™. These products may also be used to protect rub rails and other rubber fitments.
If the boat is to remain in the water for more than 2 days at a time, apply REPELIN™ fouling release coating to all underwater fabric surfaces to reduce the attachment of marine fouling and make cleanup easier. REPELIN™ can also improve performance and reduce fuel consumption. These products are effective for use in salt as well as fresh water.
If your RIB is to remain in the water for more than 2 days at a time, protect the gel coat with REPELIN™ fouling release coating. In addition to reducing the attachment of marine fouling it will keep the bottom cleaner, eliminate salt attachment, improve performance and reduce fuel consumption. Gel coat is porous and REPELIN™ will seal the pores to prevent osmosis blisters.
New gel coat is coated with a mold release agent which can impair proper bonding of long lasting protective coatings. To ensure proper attachment of REPELIN™, the hull must be scrubbed with SPEED CLEAN™ and a MARINE POWER MITT™ to remove any pollutants, prior to application.
If your RIB is to remain in the water for more than 2 days at a time, protect the painted bottom with REPELIN™ fouling release coating. In addition to reducing the attachment of marine fouling it will keep the bottom cleaner, eliminate salt attachment, improve performance and reduce fuel consumption. Wash the surface first with INFLATABLE BOAT CLEANER™ to remove any pollutants and then apply 2 coats of REPELIN™. If the hull is raw aluminum, after washing as above, coat it first with ALUMETRON™ prior to applying REPELIN™.
The deck or floor surfaces of RIB’s either have a textured pattern or sand is imbedded in the gel coat, or paint, in order to provide traction and reduce slipping, especially when wet. Protecting them with wax or polish is not recommended as it can make them dangerously slippery. Left unprotected, the decks are susceptible to UV damage, soiling, staining and excessive scrubbing to keep them clean. SURE STEP™ is a pressure sensitive sealer and UV protective polish that utilizes Adaptive Reflex technology. It seals the surface, protects the New Boat shine and makes the decks easy to maintain and keep clean. When you step on the deck, your weight creates pressure which gives you grip. When you take your foot off, releasing the pressure, they become smooth and slippery again making dirt attachment difficult. When the decks are wet, the traction increases even more.
Scrub the non-skid deck with SPEED CLEAN™ and a scrub brush and the smooth parts with a MARINE POWER MITT™. Rinse well and dry. Apply 2 coats of SURE STEP™ and buff to a beautiful shine with a SURE STEP BUFFING WHEEL™ on a portable drill.
Once your boat is properly protected, maintenance usually consists of keeping it clean by rinsing with clear water and wiping dry from time to time but if stuff happens, we’ve got you covered. If your boat gets soiled from greasy atmospheric fall out, diesel soot, scum line, or other nasties, wet it with water, spray on some free rinsing, biodegradable INFLATABLE BOAT CLEANER™, wash away the grime with a MARINE POWER MITT™ and wipe dry with a chamois or microfiber cloth.
Scuff marks or other dirt or stains that are difficult to remove can be scrubbed clean with SPEED CLEAN™. Rinse well, dry and re-apply POLY GUARD™ and REPELIN™ if applicable.
Even though your boat bottom is protected with REPELIN™, if it sits in the water for more than a few days you may see slime forming on the bottom. Simply wipe off the slime and the bottom will stay clean for months. If the boat sits in the water for long periods of time, without maintenance, marine growth may attach. Soft growth such as slime and algae can be removed with INFLATABLE BOTTOM SPRAY™. Hard growth, such as barnacles or zebra or quagga mussels can be removed with FOUL OFF™. Bottom cleaners can remove REPELIN™ and POLY GUARD™. After removing the growth, scrub with SPEED CLEAN™ and re-apply POLY GUARD™ and REPELIN™.
POLY GUARD™, REPELIN™ and SURE STEP™ have a life of 6 to 8 months in continental climates and 3 to 4 months in tropical climates. At the end of each period, scrub all surfaces with SPEED CLEAN™ and re-apply the protectors. Regular use of these products can extend useful life of your new RIB or Inflatable Boat, make maintenance easier and add value and pride of ownership to your boat.
The white residue (haze if applied properly, very thin) are the ingredients used as a carrier for the active ingredients. When the Sure Step dries, the active ingredients are deposited into and onto the gelcoat and the carrier remains as the white haze that you see. It needs to be wiped away or buffed off prior to applying the 2nd coat and after the 2nd coat to bring out the beautiful shine that has been hiding on your deck.
From your description, I believe that you will have two problems. First if water gets into the residue before the active ingredients are allowed to bond to the gelcoat, it will prevent this from happening and since this has occurred and left for two weeks, it will be difficult to remove by wiping or buffing. The second problem is that you will probably have dirt and pollution on the deck that needs to be stripped off before reapplying the Sure Step.
A good analogy would be rain on wet paint and then leaving it for two weeks. Painting over will only make the mess worse, resulting in a poor finish and possibly adhesion problems. You need to strip it and start over.
In your case, you shouldn’t need to rewash with Boat Clean Plus unless there is a lot of airborne pollution where you keep your boat (near an airport or in an industrialized area). Just scrub the deck well with Boat Scrub and reapply the Sure Step, being sure to wipe away or buff the haze off after each coat. I suggest working in a small area at a time, 3 or 4 sq. ft. It’s easier to remove the haze if it is not allowed to dry too much and if you put on thin rather than thick coats. I like to use a jeweler’s buffing wheel on the end of an 18 volt drill instead of rubbing with towels and brushes. It’s a fast and easy way to remove the haze and it also brings out the shine better.
It’s a judgment call. The cleaner you get the surface before you reapply the Sure Step, the brighter it will appear, the better it will bond and the longer it will last., however a lot of sailors just wash the deck well with Boat Clean Plus and reapply the Sure Step. They seem to be happy with the results.
If the decks are clean and there are no scuff marks or stains you can get away with this because the previous coats of Sure Step will have sealed the pores in the gelcoat. Sealing the pores is very important as that prevents bacteria, dirt and stains from lodging in these microscopic crevices. Open and contaminated pores in polyester gelcoat has been proven to induce the generation of free radicals which, in combination with UV, accelerates the degradation of the gelcoat polymers. The reason for using Boat Clean Plus and Boat Scrub is to deep clean the pores as well as to deoxidize, clean and brighten the surface.
On my boat, I always use both products once each year. When the deck is wet with Boat Clean Plus and water, I add some Boat Scrub, scrub it quickly again and rinse it clean. It doesn’t add much time and I always get perfect results. My decks are bright white and I like to keep them that way. If you take shortcuts with cleaning then over time the white takes on a gray or yellow tinge, which I don’t care for. Perhaps I’m just too fussy.
1. Each jar of Sure Step will cover about 200 sq. ft. and you need 2 coats. It can not be used over wax or Poly Glow but can be used on all deck surfaces, including the seating area. It is not greasy or slippery like wax and will not transfer onto your cloths or yellow the gelcoat like carnauba wax.
2. The second coat of Sure Step can be applied more than 24 hours after the first but not before. The reason is that you need a minimum of 24 hours for the first coat to cure so that the second coat will layer on top for added protection instead of simply removing the first coat and replacing it with the second. The danger of leaving it too long between coats is that it may get dirty and require re-cleaning before applying the second coat. Be sure to clean and prep the surface with Boat Clean Plus and Boat Scrub before applying Sure Step. This is important because these two cleaners will deep clean the pores in the gelcoat, removing dirt, grime, bacteria, suntan oil etc., and the second cleaner will remove any traces of oxidized gelcoat, scuff marks and stains. Remember that Sure Step will seal the gelcoat so if you don’t get it pristine, you will seal the dirt, grime and stains, etc., into the finish.
3. Poly Glow is a water based acrylic polymer and it will be degraded by petrochemical solvents or exhaust and unburned jet fuel that may rain down on your boat from the passing planes. You may also have difficulties with Carnauba wax in your location. In addition to yellowing your gelcoat when the sun gets at it, it remains greasy or oily which holds dirt, dust and pollutants, such as aircraft exhaust, against the gelcoat which can cause streaking and discoloration, usually an overall grey color. It will also transfer to clothing. Many boat manufacturers now recommend against using Carnauba wax on their boats for these reasons. I suggest using a synthetic polish like Premium Boat Shine. It does not contain Carnauba and gives you a diamond hard, anti-static finish that is far more resistant to the pollutants in your area. It also gives you better protection against UV from the sun and will not transfer onto clothing.
The second coat can be applied more than 24 hours after the first but not before. I recommend that you deep clean the surface of your boat at least once a year, prior to the application of a protective polish for optimum results, otherwise you wind up sealing in any accumulated dirt, pollutants, oxidized material, etc.
Boat Clean Plus and Boat Scrub are so effective when used together that they will even remove microscopic bacteria, mould, grime, salt and other pollutants from the pores. Both are free rinsing so that they will not leave any residue to interfere with the bonding of Sure Step to your deck.
Sure Step will seal the pores in your gelcoat, so it’s important to get your deck pristine, because it won’t look any better than that in the future. The two cleaners have different properties and when used together will deep clean the surface and remove any pollutants and chalky, oxidized gelcoat that can inhibit adhesion.
Contaminants left in the pores, even if protected with a coating, can continue to eat away at the gelcoat, encouraging free radical degradation. Did you ever wonder why your gelcoat continues to get dull and chalky, even though you washed it with boat soap and waxed it? Your results will only be as good as the products that you use and the effort that you put into it.
Boat Clean Plus is a free rinsing, water based, cleaner, degreaser that is highly effective at removing oily or greasy pollutants, even traces of suntan oils and airborne fall out. Boat Scrub is also free rinsing and is a deoxidizer that is effective at removing oxidized gelcoat and scuff marks. It also contains Hypexine, a leaching agent, which is effective at penetrating deep into the gelcoat to remove deep set stains and brighten your gelcoat.

such a wonderful product
I just want to take the time to thank your company for such a wonderful product. I recently purchased the sure step package. And let me just say it works beautifully. Along with the boat clean and boat scrub plus. This is my first boat and this product has helped our 30 year old boat look young again. Thanks again. Keep up the awesome job.

I HAVE BEEN USING YOUR PRODUCTS FOR OVER TEN YEARS NOW.
I HAVE BEEN USING YOUR PRODUCTS FOR OVER TEN YEARS NOW. (BOAT SCRUB, BOAT CLEAN PLUS, AND SURE STEP) I FIRST LEARNED ABOUT THEM AT ONE OF THE BOAT SHOWS, AND HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY SATISFIED.
I AM VERY PARTICULAR ABOUT MY BOAT, AND LOVE THE WAY IT MAKES THE NONSKID SHINE. MY BOAT IS A 2005, AND LOOKS LIKE THE DAY WE TOOK DELIVERY.
WE LOCK THRU ON THE RIVERS IN PITTSBURGH, AND OUR DECK GETS PRETTY DIRTY FROM DECK SHOES AND DIRT IN GENERAL. IT WASHES OFF WITH A HOSE AND A SOFT BRUSH. VERY EASY TO TAKE CARE OF, ONCE YOUR PRODUCT IS APPLIED. (I USE TWO COATS TWO TIMES A YEAR)

Recommend product
The boating community has been sadly lacking a good product to protect non-skid that keeps it non-skid! Your product is tops! Applied Aurora Boat Clean, Aurora Boat Scrub and Aurora Sure Step Polish per instructions; results are super. Have recommended product to many other boaters in marina.

You have saved me a ton of work!!
Before, the non-skid would seem to suck up dirt, and I would have to scrub it every time I walked on it. Aurora Sure Step certainly does what you say it does. It was not slippery at all. When I rinsed my foot prints, they just went away. You have saved me a ton of work. I was going to refinish the topsides of this boat. I will not have to do that now. Aurora Sure Step has brought back that factory new glow.

Never knew what to put on non-skid before a neighbor recommended Sure Step.
Waxing non-skid always seemed wrong, Soft Scrub gets it clean but doesn’t protect. Sure Step cleans, protects, and actually adds grip, a must have product for any boat.

Fantastic
I can honestly say that this product has kept my swim platform white and clean for going on 1 month with no more than hosing off the non-skid. Used the 3-step process to prep and clean. Product works as advertised!

It Works
Hi I wanted to send a few pics of my deck. I just bought this boat in February and thought it needed a new paint job. Sure step really brought it back to a shine and it really keeps it clean! More then that it works. You do have much more traction. Thank you from a satisfied customer Ryan Bane

My Deck Never Looked Better
I applied Sure Step to my 1976 C&C 33 mk1 deck (40 years old) and that deck never looked better. it took 2 Boat Clean Plus, 2 Boat Scrub and 4 Sure Step. I’m really impressed with the results.

Excellent Products
Just to let you know I recently (may 2016) used your sure step method on my 1991 searay 440. I was totally pleased with the results. I’ve always babied this boat but could never find the right product to do the deep clean and protect on the textured top. So pleased. I hope it lasts the season. I’ve used the dinghy cleaners for years and also impressed. I will continue with the sure step forever. Regards. “Miss Fortunate” boat name in Gore Bay, Manitoulin island. Chris Hollier
