NOTE: Most boat covers, Bimini tops, boat and pontoon boat covers, dodgers and T-tops can be conveniently cleaned with FABRI-KLEAN® fabric cleaner and waterproofed with CANVAS SHIELD® fabric guard, while in place, on the boat. Sail covers and boat cushions will have to be removed and cleaned and waterproofed with the fabric guard on the dock or off site. Always spray CANVAS SHIELD® outdoors or in a well ventilated area.
1. Spray the exterior surface of the marine canvas with a jet of water from a garden hose to blast away any loose dirt and wet the surface thoroughly.
3. Scrub the marine canvas with a soft bristle brush until all soil has lifted.
4. Spray clean with a jet of water. Repeat 2. and 3. if necessary.
5. Allow boat canvas to dry thoroughly.
6. Spray CANVAS SHIELD® fabric guard onto Sunbrella or other marine canvas fabric until evenly wet (or apply with a lint free, low knap, fabric paint roller or paint brush).
7. When dry to the touch apply a 2nd coat.
8. Allow CANVAS SHIELD® fabric guard to cure 12 to 24 hours, depending on temperature and humidity, protecting it from rain or dew.
The most popular brand of marine canvas is Sunbrella. Top Gun, Top Notch, WeatherMax, Shoretex, Coast Guard, Recacril, Outdura and Sunforger are other common brands. There are others. They are mostly made with solution dyed acrylic or polyester threads. FABRI-KLEAN, fabric cleaner and CANVAS SHIELD®, fabric guard, can be safely used to clean and waterproof all marine canvas as well as other outdoor fabric made from natural and synthetic yarns.
CANVAS SHIELD® waterproof spray made with DRYKON® is a green product that’s environment friendly, human friendly and boat friendly. It’s VOC compliant and does not contain PTFE which can release cancer causing PFOA. It does not contain Silicone which can create yellow stains and void the warranty on some marine canvas boat covers.
So, what’s a PFOA and what’s the big deal?
CANVAS SHIELD® with DRYKON® penetrates deep into the fabric like Sunbrella Boat Covers, to coat each thread with its New Nanoized Polymer for Superior Waterproofing, and Protection against Stains, Mold, UV, and Color Fade. Marine fabrics remain breathable, flexible and retains its original color. It’s PFOA Free, Non Toxic, VOC Compliant, Environment Friendly and Safe for Natural and Synthetic fabrics.

For your safety, always wear protective gear when handling boat care products.
Easy to maintain.
Keeping your new RIB or Inflatable Boat clean and protected against environmental damage can easily double the useful life of your boat, keep it looking like the day you bought it, increase your pride of ownership and bring a much higher return when it comes time to trade up or sell.
Your boat will be expected to live and survive in the Marine Environment; the toughest environment on the planet. It will be under constant attack from dirt, grime, UV, infrared, suntan lotion, marine growth, bacteria, bird and spider droppings, scuffs, stains, ozone and more. A simple and regular maintenance regime can easily defeat these ravages, but you need the right specialty products and procedure to do the job. Failure to keep your boat clean and protected will result in it looking old and tired before its time, may void your warranty and is sure to bring additional problems that can be costly to repair.
Using the right products to care for your boat is important. Household, automotive and industrial products can often cause more harm than good and should not be used. Aurora Boat Care Products are specially formulated for optimum care and maintenance of RIB and Inflatable boats. They’re endorsed, recommended and used by the top boat manufacturers in the world. These products are safe to use on Hypalon, PVC, Polyurethane, Rubber, Fiberglass and Aluminum.
NOTE: Detailed instructions for use and application of all products are on the product labels and on www.AuroraMarine.com
This is the easiest and best time to protect your boat. Within a few months in the marine environment, an unprotected boat can become soiled, stained, fouled and begin to degrade, requiring restoration before it can be properly protected.
When the special fabric for your tube and inflatable floor was manufactured, lubricants and other chemicals were used and they remain on the surface of the fabric after the boat was manufactured. It’s important to strip them away before applying the UV protector otherwise poor adhesion and failure of the protector can result. Even though your boat is new and appears clean, scrub it well with SPEED CLEAN® and a MARINE POWER MITT® to remove these pollutants, rinse well and dry. When the tube and fabric floor is dry, apply 2 coats of POLY GUARD®. These products may also be used to protect rub rails and other rubber fitments.
If the boat is to remain in the water for more than 2 days at a time, apply REPELIN® fouling release coating to all underwater fabric surfaces to reduce the attachment of marine fouling and make cleanup easier. REPELIN® can also improve performance and reduce fuel consumption. These products are effective for use in salt as well as fresh water.
If your RIB is to remain in the water for more than 2 days at a time, protect the gel coat with REPELIN® fouling release coating. In addition to reducing the attachment of marine fouling it will keep the bottom cleaner, eliminate salt attachment, improve performance and reduce fuel consumption. Gel coat is porous and REPELIN® will seal the pores to prevent osmosis blisters.
New gel coat is coated with a mold release agent which can impair proper bonding of long lasting protective coatings. To ensure proper attachment of REPELIN®, the hull must be scrubbed with SPEED CLEAN® and a MARINE POWER MITT® to remove any pollutants, prior to application.
If your RIB is to remain in the water for more than 2 days at a time, protect the painted bottom with REPELIN® fouling release coating. In addition to reducing the attachment of marine fouling it will keep the bottom cleaner, eliminate salt attachment, improve performance and reduce fuel consumption. Wash the surface first with INFLATABLE BOAT CLEANER® to remove any pollutants and then apply 2 coats of REPELIN®. If the hull is raw aluminum, after washing as above, coat it first with ALUMETRON® prior to applying REPELIN®.
The deck or floor surfaces of RIB’s either have a textured pattern or sand is imbedded in the gel coat, or paint, in order to provide traction and reduce slipping, especially when wet. Protecting them with wax or polish is not recommended as it can make them dangerously slippery. Left unprotected, the decks are susceptible to UV damage, soiling, staining and excessive scrubbing to keep them clean. SURE STEP® is a pressure sensitive sealer and UV protective polish that utilizes Adaptive Reflex technology. It seals the surface, protects the New Boat shine and makes the decks easy to maintain and keep clean. When you step on the deck, your weight creates pressure which gives you grip. When you take your foot off, releasing the pressure, they become smooth and slippery again making dirt attachment difficult. When the decks are wet, the traction increases even more.
Scrub the non-skid deck with SPEED CLEAN® and a scrub brush and the smooth parts with a MARINE POWER MITT®. Rinse well and dry. Apply 2 coats of SURE STEP® and buff to a beautiful shine with a ®SURE STEP BUFFING WHEEL™ on a portable drill.
Once your boat is properly protected, maintenance usually consists of keeping it clean by rinsing with clear water and wiping dry from time to time but if stuff happens, we’ve got you covered. If your boat gets soiled from greasy atmospheric fall out, diesel soot, scum line, or other nasties, wet it with water, spray on some free rinsing, biodegradable INFLATABLE BOAT CLEANER®, wash away the grime with a MARINE POWER MITT® and wipe dry with a chamois or microfiber cloth.
Even though your boat bottom is protected with REPELIN®, if it sits in the water for more than a few days you may see slime forming on the bottom. Simply wipe off the slime and the bottom will stay clean for months. If the boat sits in the water for long periods of time, without maintenance, marine growth may attach. Soft growth such as slime and algae can be removed with INFLATABLE BOTTOM SPRAY®. Hard growth, such as barnacles or zebra or quagga mussels can be removed with FOUL OFF®. Bottom cleaners can remove REPELIN® and POLY GUARD®. After removing the growth, scrub with SPEED CLEAN® and re-apply POLY GUARD® and REPELIN®.
POLY GUARD®, REPELIN® and SURE STEP® have a life of 6 to 8 months in continental climates and 3 to 4 months in tropical climates. At the end of each period, scrub all surfaces with SPEED CLEAN® and re-apply the protectors. Regular use of these products can extend useful life of your new RIB or Inflatable Boat, make maintenance easier and add value and pride of ownership to your boat.
Dirt, including soap scum and moisture are key ingredients for mold, the others being still air, warmth and darkness or shade which are conveniently provided by boat covers. The removal of one or more of these ingredients will prohibit the formation and growth of mold and their associated stains and health hazards.
Boat covers can be safely and thoroughly cleaned with free rinsing FABRI-KLEAN fabric cleaner and waterproofed with CANVAS SHIELD water proof spray. FABRI-KLEAN will not leave a soap residue. CANVAS SHIELD will not support mold growth and because of its deep penetrating power, it encapsulates and protects the underside of the threads in the fabric as well as the exterior side, giving it better protection.
Mold spores are ever present in the air. When they land on a suitable host they rapidly grow and multiply. The visible mold that you see and even wipe away is the bloom, like the flower of a dandelion. You can remove it but unless you remove the root or inhibit it from growing, it will continue to grow and the root will burrow deeper and become stronger and more tenacious. The bloom releases spores into the surrounding air to propagate more mold and the root continues to devour the material under the surface. It’s this degradation under the surface that gives the indelible mold stains visible on vinyl seats, inflatable boats and synthetic fabric boat tops and cushions. Removal of the mold stains usually causes even more damage to the substrate.
Regular cleaning with free rinsing FABRI-KLEAN and annual re-application of CANVAS SHIELD plus proper ventilation under the boat cover can easily double or even triple the life of your boat canvas.
No, it’s not a new form of algae or a strange bug. PFOA is the acronym for Perflurooctanoic Acid, C8HF15O2, which is a chemical used in the production of PTFE, Teflon™, for water proofing canvas and other outdoor fabrics. As the PTFE material breaks down, it releases PFOA into the atmosphere. Some products are intentionally made with PFOA.
It was discovered that PFOA has been found in the bloodstream of over 98% of American men, women and children. No one is exactly sure how it made its way into the bloodstream of such a large number of people, but the EPA is now pressuring industry to eliminate its use.
The study has shown that PFOA was still present in the human body approximately four years after exposure and that levels were only reduced by approximately one half. PFOA has been implicated in causing cancer of the pancreas, testicles, liver and mammary glands. It’s also been linked to miscarriages, thyroid problems, low birth weights and weakened immune systems.
Aurora Marine’s latest discovery CANVAS SHIELD™ fabric guard is a new Waterproofing coating for marine and other outdoor fabrics and clothing that does not use PTFE, Teflon or Silicone. The secret is that it utilizes Nanoized Polymers and is completely PFOA free. It’s also a much greener alternative; it’s nontoxic, nonflammable when dry, VOC compliant and safe for most natural and synthetic fabrics.
CANVAS SHIELD fabric guard penetrates deep into the fabric to coat and protect each thread, rather than just residing on the surface, so it continues to protect against water migration when the surface coating is worn away from washing, abrasion and environmental degradation. Even though water no longer beads on the surface, your marine canvas still remains waterproof if protected with CANVAS SHIELD fabric guard. The fabric maintains its natural breathability, flexibility and color, even after repeated application. Re-application is recommended annually or when the fabric finally loses its waterproofing ability.
In addition to waterproofing, it also resists stains, mold, UV and color fading.
For best results, the fabric must be clean, dry and free of surfactant residue from soap or detergents. Aurora has also developed FABRI-KLEAN™ fabric cleaner, specifically for pre-cleaning fabrics prior to treatment with CANVAS SHIELD fabric guard and for regular maintenance. FABRI-KLEAN is a free rinsing, concentrated, low sudsing and environment friendly, water based and water activated cleaner with deep penetrating power to clean the threads, not just the surface. It’s effective at removing oil based as well as organic soil such as airborne pollutants, bird droppings, dirt, mold, even grass stains and fish blood. Wet the surface first and spray a bit of the environment friendly concentrate onto the surface, agitate it with a brush and rinse it clean. It’s free rinsing so there is no residue to affect adhesion. When dry, spray on two coats of CANVAS SHIELD fabric guard and allow to cure for 24 hours. Enjoy your waterproof canvas.
Maintenance is easy. Just rinse dirt off with a garden hose. If tough stains, such as bird droppings, remain, we recommend washing with FABRI-KLEAN. When washed with free rinsing FABRI-KLEAN, CANVAS SHIELD can withstand multiple washing before re-application is required.
