ALUMETRON® Fights Corrosion, Protects Aluminum up to 10 YEARS. Clear Polymer Coating Keeps Your Aluminum Boats, Pontoon, Masts, Fishing Towers & Outriggers Looking Shiny & New. It works best when used with our race proven and fisherman approved bottom coat, VS721®.
ALUMETRON® is a clear polymer coating that protects raw, anodized and cast aluminum against oxidation, tarnish, staining, corrosion, pitting, salt spray, road film, acid rain and environmental damage. It’s so tough that it will stand up to constant fresh and salt water immersion and still keep aluminum pontoons and boat hulls looking shiny and new all season long. It will protect trailered pontoons, fence rails, wakeboard and fishing towers, outriggers and sail rigging against corrosion and pitting for up to 5 years.
ALUMETRON® is unique because it bonds chemically as well as mechanically to aluminum, making it superior to any other aluminum coating. It’s water based and does not contain the many toxic chemicals and solvents associated with other coatings. It is not flammable or corrosive and is safe for the environment, the boat and the applicator. It’s easy to apply by wiping and inevitable scuffs and scratches can easily be retouched during the year. It seals the fissures in the aluminum making the surface less susceptible to attachment of dirt and marine growth. It even gives the aluminum a smooth silky feel which women appreciate when swimming near the boat.
The ideal time to apply ALUMETRON® is when the boat is new, before the logs become corroded, but Aurora Marine makes a full line of products that easily cleans and restores abused pontoons. Now even older pontoons can be made to look new again. They also manufacture a clear, environment friendly, anti-fouling that can be applied over the ALUMETRON® which resists the attachment of marine growth.
Keeping your pontoons clean and shiny not only improves the value of your boat and enhances pride of ownership, but the reduced friction improves performance and reduces fuel consumption. ALUMETRON® might be one of the best investments you can make for your pontoon boat.
The ideal time to apply ALUMETRON® and VS721® is when the boat is brand new.
Here are a few pictures of my brand new Lowe Tritoon, still up on blocks to get the pontoons off the bunks so I could work on it. I followed your directions..
Here are some before and after pictures of my aluminum wakeboard tower. I followed your advice and wet sanded the whole tower to remove the.
You too can protect the finish on your pontoons for up to 10 years with ALUMETRON™. The best time to apply ALUMETRON™ is when your boat is brand new but if your boat is used and your pontoons look crappy, you can easily restore them with the Aurora System Matched products and a little effort.
In our previous videos, we showed you how to calculate the square footage of your pontoons and determine the quantity of products that you need, showed you the quick and easy way to remove algae from your pontoons with ALGEX™ and showed you how to buff away the stains in less than 60 minutes with ALUMABUFF™.
In this video we’re going to show you how to protect your pontoons with ALUMETRON™ to keep them shiny and stain free for up to 10 years.
You’ll need a lint free cotton cloth, some ALUMETRON™, a plastic paint tray and some rubber gloves.
First we fold the cloth into a pad about 6 inches long. Now pour some ALUMETRON™ into the tray and we’re ready to go.
Dip the folded edge of the pad into the ALUMETRON™ and squeeze out any excess.
Apply ALUMETRON™ by wiping with the grain, in long, smooth, wet on wet, overlapping strokes. Don’t go over any coated sections or overwork the application. You can correct it with the next coats.
By the time you finish one coat, the pontoon should be dry enough for the next. You need a total of four coats but as you can see, it goes on quickly and easily. You’ll be finished in no time.
Drying time can vary depending on ambient temperature and humidity. If it’s hot and dry, work in smaller sections to maintain a wet on wet application.
It really is that quick and easy.
Now you too can easily restore your pontoons to like new again and keep them that way for up to 10 years with minimum maintenance.
ALUMETRON®
Care & Maintenance
DESCRIPTION
ALUMETRON® is a “Direct To Metal”, clear, polymeric coating that bonds to the aluminum chemically to protect it against environmental damage. It’s a high performance finish coat with exceptional adhesion and is suitable for application above and below water. It provides protection against ozone, salt and fresh water, staining, tarnish, pitting, acid rain, road film, salt spray and salt air. It can be used on raw and anodized aluminum is also suitable for protecting galvanized steel, brass, bronze and copper.
ALUMETRON® cures to a clear, glossy, durable finish and can maintain the shiny finish of aluminum for up to 10 years when properly applied and maintained. It’s a water based coating with low VOCs and without hazardous, corrosive or flammable ingredients, making it safe to use and Environment Friendly. Read the Warranty Documents for full description of Standard 3 year and 5 Year Extended Warranty Coverage.
MARINE FOULING AND ADDITIONAL PROTECTION COATING
When VS721 BOTTOM COAT® Fouling Release Coating is applied above and below the waterline, ALUMETRON® can last up to 10 years. Reapplying VS721 BOTTOM COAT® annually will improve the UV protection, durability and performance of ®ALUMETRON™ and automatically extend the warranty from 3 to 5 years.
CLEANING
Keeping the protective ALUMETRON® and VS721 BOTTOM COAT® coatings clean will extend the life and appearance of the coatings and the beauty of your aluminum boat or pontoons. Depending on the environmental conditions where you keep your boat, we recommend setting up a regular cleaning schedule of once a month or even once a week. Tropical areas or polluted waterways will require more frequent maintenance.
Above the waterline:
Cleaning aluminum pontoons and boats protected by ALUMETRON® and VS721 BOTTOM COAT® normally consists of rinsing with fresh water and a garden hose and wiping with a soft cloth or sponge. Tougher soiling can be safely washed by first wetting the aluminum with water, spraying on BOAT CLEAN PLUS® and washing with a soft cloth or sponge and rinsing clean. ALUMETRON® coated with ALUMETRON® only may require regular washing with BOAT CLEAN PLUS®.
Below the waterline:
It’s normal for slime to form on any surface submerged below the waterline, even those protected with VS721 BOTTOM COAT®, although it’s more resistant. Bacterial slime is food for higher life forms such as algae, mussels and barnacles. When slime begins to attach, simply wipe it off with a sponge or MARINE POWER MITT®. This can be done by hauling, wiping and re-launching the boat or by taking the boat to a shallows where a swimmer can easily reach and wipe the bottom free of slime. If slime is kept off the bottom, no marine growth will attach.
MARINE FOULING
Removal:
If marine fouling is allowed to attach to the bottom of your boat, it can be removed by spraying the affected areas with ALGEX® and power washing clean. Follow the directions on the ALGEX® bottle.
Protection against marine fouling:
Annual application of clear VS721 BOTTOM COAT® fouling release coating with regular maintenance will eliminate marine fouling. In the event that maintenance is not kept up and fouling occurs, aluminum hulls, pontoons and other underwater surfaces will be much easier to clean if the surface is protected with VS721 BOTTOM COAT®.
STAINING:
Depending on the chemical composition of the water in which you keep your boat, some stains, such as those caused by tannin or industrial pollutants, are unavoidable. If they attach to unprotected aluminum they can be very difficult to remove. If they stain boat bottoms protected with ALUMETRON® and VS721 BOTTOM COAT®, the stains can be removed with ALGEX®.
DAMAGE REPAIR
Scuffs and scrapes from beaching your boat, rubbing it against a dock and even aggressive rubbing against a fender in a storm can all result in removal of the protective coating on your aluminum boat or pontoon. Fortunately repair to damaged ALUMETRON® and VS721 BOTTOM COAT® are easy. Remove the boat or pontoon from the water. First, aggressively scrub the damaged area and the surrounding 6 inches with undiluted BOAT CLEAN PLUS®. Rinse clean. Next use ALUMABUFF® and a MARINE POWER MITT® and scrub the damaged area, in a back and forth motion following the grain, to remove any scuffs and stains. (NOTE: ALUMABUFF® will not repair dents or deep gouges.) Rinse and dry thoroughly. Apply the first 2 coats of ALUMETRON® to the damaged area, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Apply the 3rd and 4th coats overlapping the previous by about 1 inch. Allow to dry for a minimum of 96 hours and re-apply 2 coats of VS721 BOTTOM COAT®. When done properly, the repaired finish will not be noticeable and the repair will not void the warranty.
REMOVAL
In the event that ALUMETRON® and VS721 BOTTOM COAT® needs to be removed, this can be accomplished by wiping with lacquer thinners and clean cloths.
OVER-COATING
ALUMETRON® can be used as a primer on aluminum for over-coating with water based paint above the waterline or water based anti-fouling paint below the waterline. Apply 4 coats as usual and allow a minimum of 96 hours to fully cure and spray or brush on your desired water based paint. Wait 24 hours after painting for full cure before immersing your boat in water.
No. Alumetron is not an anti-fouling. It will help because it fills in the fissures in the aluminum which makes it harder for the algae to attach. The product that you want is VS721.
Alumetron is a clear, direct to metal, protective coating that bonds chemically to aluminum to prevent staining and oxidation. It will keep your pontoons looking new all summer long, but by itself, it will not prevent fouling.
After you remove the growth with Algex, brighten the pontoons with Alumabrite, then clean and prep them with Boat Clean Plus. They should look new by now.
Apply several coats of Alumetron by wiping it on with a cloth and let it thoroughly cure for 4 days. Now you can apply 2 coats of VS721 below the waterline. VS721 is so slippery that it’s difficult for anything to stick. If you get some slime, just running the boat will knock it off or you can wipe it clean with a sponge if required. You may have some slime at the end of the season but it will wash off with a sponge and a bit of Boat Clean Plus.
VS721 will also give you an increase in speed and reduce your fuel consumption.
Boat Clean Plus is a free rinsing cleaner and degreaser that effectively removes pollutants, even those that you can’t see, and rinses off completely with out leaving a residue like many other cleaners do. We recommend its use before using Alumabrite to insure even penetration which eliminates streaking and also before applying Alumetron to make sure that there are no remaining pollutants that could inhibit a durable bond.
It’s an extra step and adds a small cost and is not always necessary but compared to fixing a streaky surface or having to remove the Alumetron and start again or patch it, because it didn’t bond in spots is well worth it. “Better Safe than Sorry” really applies in this case. The only time we get emails asking for help is when someone took a shortcut and needs to fix the mess.
Yes you can paint over Alumetron with a water based latex paint. For added protection, you can then overcoat the paint with a couple of coats of Alumetron. Because of its chemical bonding properties, Alumetron makes an excellent aluminum primer for water based paint.
Yes, fall and winter is an excellent time to brighten, restore and protect your pontoons. That way you’ll be ready to launch in the spring, rather than rushing around trying to get everything done to get your boat ready. A lot of dealers are now offering to restore and protect their customer’s boats with Alumetron.
First you need to get the rest of the marine growth off your pontoons. (See Getting Under the Trailer Bunks to Clean the Boat Bottom / Bottom Cleaning & Protecting / Ask the Skipper for instructions on how to lift your boat off the trailer). Use Algex to clean the growth off. No scrubbing. Just spray it on, wait ½ hour and rinse clean. Next brighten the pontoons by spraying Alumabrite on the pontoons and rinsing clean. This will take about 5 to 10 minutes per pontoon. After you need to wash and degrease the aluminum with Boat Clean Plus, rinse and allow to dry. You can now wipe on 2 or 3 coats of Alumetron and let cure for a few days. The last step is applying one coat of VS721 below the waterline and wiping off the haze. Shouldn’t take you more than an hour or so.
This will protect your pontoons against oxidation and staining over the winter. Before you launch, put on a 2nd coat of VS721 and you’re ready to launch.
You will need to wash the bottom every fall and reapply 2 coats of VS721 every year but the Alumetron should last you 5 years or more.

Pontoons still looks great after 5 years
I applied Alumetron to my pontoon boat when it was new 5 years ago. They still look great but I want to keep them that way for another 5 years so I want to apply Alumetron again. What should I use to clean them before reapplying Alumetron. Thanks, Don Gustafson jr.

Alumetron is the best product
Alumetron is the best product I’ve ever found for my pontoon boat. After 6 years in salt water the pontoons still look brand new.

Thanks for making such great products.
After getting the gunge off with Algex and brightening my pontoons with Alumabrite, I applied your Alumetron and my pontoons look great. I also put your VS721 below the waterline. It’s been two months now and the pontoons almost clean themselves when I take the boat out. I just have to wipe the slime off the waterline. Some of the other boats in the marina have zebra mussels but none on mine. I’ll let you know how long it lasts. Thanks for making such great products.

I love Alumetron
I love Alumetron. Every fall I had to clean the corrosion off the pontoons with acid. This is the first year I didn’t have to do that. Just washed them with your boat cleaner.
Thanks,

I’m impressed
I’m impressed. I put your Alumetron on my pontoons and last summer managed to scratch it off one side on the dock. I thought I would have to strip it all off and reapply it, but after talking to your tech support rep, I just touched it up. You can’t even tell where it was damaged, except for a little ding (but that’s boating ;-). This will be my 3rd year. I’m a fan.

I’m so happy.
I just finished applying Alumetron and VS721 to my pontoons. They look great. I’m so happy. I started with Algex to remove the marine growth and then buffed them with Alumabuff. I waited until this April and washed them with Boat Clean Plus to clean and degrease. I applied 4 thin coats of the Alumetron and then finished with VS721.
Thanks again,
Dave
